Three years ago, on April 8th, 2017, 40 undergraduates at Cleveland State did something truly amazing. After a twenty seven year absence from campus, these 40 undergraduates came together and managed to recharter our chapter, signifying that we became an official Sigma Phi Epsilon chapter once again. Martin Barnard and Stephen Matz both talked about being there for the historic day. Martin went on to say, “Our goal for so long was getting that charter, and everything we did was to get that banquet that recognized what we had done. We got the news in December and had the banquet in the spring, and I remember so many people being there. People from SigEp Headquarters, past alumni, CSU officials, brothers that had just graduated the semester before were all there to witness our charter.” Stephen was starting to get involved with the chapter as the charter occurred, and as he recalls, “The importance of the event stood out, and one could tell that a lot of time and effort had been put forth to get to that point.” Those 40 brothers went in to history to join the original 41 members, who formed Ohio Nu on November 21st, 1964, as Charter members. Since that historic day, Ohio Nu has continued striving to improve in our effort to bring continuous development to every brother that has joined. Out of the 40 charter brothers, five are still in Ohio Nu which includes Martin and Stephen, and each one feels an immense proud feeling to see that the chapter they helped to charter has advanced faster than they could have ever imagined. As Martin goes on to say, “This exec has so much potential to grow this chapter farther. The next goal from here is up to the organization and the legacy we’re leaving behind. From the president to the newest brother, there is a high chance for them to create their own legacy for this chapter.” Stephen added, “the chapter has gone through changes and we’re now moving onto the next big thing. Currently, there is so many in the chapter that get behind SigEp’s meaning. There’s more involvement from the chapter to achieve common goals as everyone grows with quality to pursue ambitious goals.” With every new achievement and milestone Ohio Nu accomplishes, we remember the 40 balanced men that helped to make it all possible back on April 8th.
